North Korea claims test of missile-ready hydrogen bomb
North Korea on Sunday tested its sixth and largest nuclear device, a demonstration of power that triggered a magnitude 6.3 earthquake around the area of its test site.
The detonation of what Pyongyang claimed was a hydrogen bomb capable of being mounted on a ballistic missile marks the latest show of defiance to the international community, particularly the US, amid a tense stand-off over the regime’s rapidly developing weapons programmes.
The China Earthquake Administration and the US Geological Survey both measured the quake at magnitude 6.3, with the Chinese body saying it had occurred at a depth of zero km. Officials in South Korea and Japan also confirmed they believed the earthquake was the result of a nuclear explosion.
The tremor was stronger than those created by the regime’s five previous tests, suggesting the device had a significantly higher yield. The country’s parliamentary defence committee estimated the device had a yield of up to 100 kilotons, about 10 times more powerful than the fifth test.

Tropical Storm Lidia Strikes Los Cabos, Mexico Triggering Flooding; Dangerous Flash Flood, Mudslide Threat Continues Into This Weekend

Tropical Storm Lidia made landfall on the Baja California Peninsula west of La Paz Friday morning. The threat of flooding rain, strong winds and some storm-surge flooding will persist into this weekend.

Lidia is currently about 65 miles west-northwest of La Pax, Mexico and given the interaction with land, weakening is expected over the next couple of days.
Tropical storm warnings remain in effect for the Baja California Peninsula from San Jose de Las Palomas to Isla San Luis and also for mainland Mexico from Altata to Puerto Libertad. A tropical storm warning indicates tropical storm conditions are expected within 36 hours.
A track to the northwest is expected to continue into this weekend, essentially taking the center of Lidia up along or near the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula.
Gusty winds and heavy rain will affect Los Cabos through Friday. Impacts in the rest of the southern Baja will continue into Saturday. Keep in mind that wind speeds atop and on the windward sides of hills and mountains are often up to 30-percent stronger than the near-surface winds.
