Several Banks Set on Fire in Lebanon Amid Economic Protests

At least a dozen different banks were set on fire and vandalized Tuesday evening throughout Lebanon; The Lebanese pound continues to decline, leading to more protests; IMF warns of economic danger for the remainder of the year.

Amid the ongoing decline of the Lebanese pound and the growing frustration with what is a corrupt government regime, Lebanese citizens are continuing their protests throughout the country. Tuesday evening was met with at least a dozen banks being set ablaze as well as other acts of vandalism.

At this time, it is unknown just how many protestors were hurt in the events, however, over 80 security personnel are confirmed to have received injuries. The most significant protest took place in Tripoli, the second-largest and poorest city after a protester by the name of Fouaz al-Semaan was killed on Monday after being shot by security forces.

Protests that were frequent at the end of 2019 have only enhanced at this point. What’s changed is that the people are even angrier now. Weaponry such as petrol bombs and Molotov cocktails were used in the attacks on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

The decline of the Lebanese economy is not a new reality. Roughly 50% of the country was in poverty at the beginning of 2020 – a number that has risen since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis. Lebanon’s social affairs minister reported that nearly 75% of the country is in need of aid right now.

One Lebanese economist stated, “We have recession with hyperinflation. This accelerates poverty and precarity and increases social unrest. Ultimately, there’ll be more violence on the street because of deep anger and poverty.”

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) anticipates that Lebanon is going to experience the worst economic decline in the Middle East in 2020, as their GDP falls an expected 12%.

Australia joins US warship in South China Sea as tensions grow

An Australian warship has joined the US Navy in a drill in the South China Sea as tensions rise again between Beijing, Malaysia and Vietnam over disputed waters.

The Australian frigate HMAS Parramatta and three US warships arrived this week close to where the Chinese government survey ship Haiyang Dizhi 8 is suspected to be exploring for oil.

A vessel operated by Malaysia’s Petronas state oil company is also operating in the area.

The joint navy exercises were likely planned for months in advance but the show of force comes amid accusations that China is exploiting the Covid-19 crisis to bolster its territorial claims in regional flashpoints.

Big asteroid shows itself ahead of Earth flyby on April 29th

We've now got a good visual on the big space rock that's going to fly by Earth next week.

On Saturday (April 18), the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico captured a radar image of the asteroid 1998 OR2, which will zoom within 3.9 million miles (6.3 million kilometers) of our planet on April 29.

For perspective: The moon orbits Earth at an average distance of about 239,000 miles (385,000 km). So we have nothing to fear from asteroid 1998 OR2's Earth flyby on April 29, scientists stress.

Europe’s Largest Active Volcano in Italy, Mount Etna, Erupts

THE Etna volcano, the largest active volcano in Europe, erupted on Sunday causing lava to flow as well as large and thick columns of smoke to arise that could be seen from 30 kilometres away, from the Sicilian city of Catania.

The volcanic activity began on Friday at 11.26pm. The eruption began with an ash explosion which rose to about five kilometres and gradually increased in intensity from 8.45am on Saturday. According to the local media, there has been a rapid increase in seismic activity from 7.40am reaching its peak intensity at 9.00am.

The monitoring station, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology of Catania (INGV), also registered a lava flow this Sunday morning at 10.06am, as explained in a statement released via their social media: “The network’s follow-up has recorded Strombolian activity [explosive eruptions separated by calm periods of varying length], which have subsequently taken on the characteristics of a small source of lava.”

On the other hand, the Italian media have ensured that its eruption does not endanger either people or their properties, nor does it affect the operation of the Catania international airport, whose operation is nevertheless restricted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Etna volcano, which has been actively erupting for at least 2,700 years, has registered several eruptions in recent years, the last ones being in July 2019 and in the winter of 2008 and 2009.

Israel Imposes Curfew for Last Day of Passover as Coronavirus Death Toll Nears 120

11,868 coronavirus cases diagnosed in Israel, 284 in the West Bank ■ Israel says weighing greater role of Shin Bet security service ■ Top health official promises more tests at nursing homes

As the highly contagious coronavirus spreads around the world, Israel and the Palestinians struggle to contain a local outbreak that has virtually halted daily life and led to tens of thousands of people entering quarantine.

■ 11,868 Israelis have so far tested positive for the coronavirus; 117 people have died. In the West Bank, 284 cases have been diagnosed so far. Two have died. In Gaza, 13 cases have been diagnosed.

■ Laboratory material shortages are forcing Israel to reduce testing, but Israel says it's planning on producing materials locally. The government has called upon citizens to wear face masks in public to better protect themselves and others from the virus. Guidelines explained

■ The government has extended the lockdown on the ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak, a coronavirus hotspot, and extended curfew on Jerusalem neighborhoods with a high infection rate.

Close approach Asteroid 1998 OR near Earth at 29th April. VIDEO, Orbit path

If you’re feeling a bit disappointed with the breakup of Comet ATLAS (C/2019 Y4), console yourself by searching for a large near-Earth asteroid with the catchy official name of 52768 (1998 OR2) that is already visible with instruments as small as 15-cm (6-inch) aperture and will brighten to eleventh-magnitude by the end of April.

The following extract of a detailed printable PDF finder chart for download shows the track of 1998 OR2 when moonlight will not be a problem for observers in the British Isles as darkness falls, which is about 10:40pm in mid-April, or 11pm a week later (all times BST, central UK).

By new Moon on 23 April, 1998 OR2 is predicted to be magnitude +12 or brighter and crossing the constellation border of Cancer into Leo at a rate of close to 4¼ degrees per day. By the time that the asteroid passes closest to Earth at a distance of just 16.4 lunar distances (6.3 million kilometres) at 09:56 UT (10:56am BST) on Wednesday, 29 April, it’s predicted to peak at magnitude +10.8, moving at a rate of 6.9 degrees/day against the stars of Hydra.
