The lake’s the Oker reservoir, up in the Harz mountains in central Germany, held back by a curved concrete wall called the Okertalsperre. According to NDR, the public broadcaster for that part of the country, the operator told them on October 23 that the lake is down to 16 percent of capacity, a new all-time low.
The state’s own gauge had it at 16.22 percent, just over 2 billion gallons, at 8 in the morning on October 24. Full, this thing holds about 12.4 billion.
And the walls of the village it drowned in the 1950s are standing in the open again.
