Israel says body of Lior Rudaeff has been returned from Gaza

The Israeli military says it has identified a body handed over from Gaza as that of Israeli-Argentinian Lior Rudaeff.

The 61-year-old was killed while attempting to defend Nir Yitzhak kibbutz during the Hamas attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023 and his body was taken to Gaza by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) armed group, the military said.

PIJ said the body was found on Friday in Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

Hamas has now returned all 20 living hostages and 23 out of 28 deceased hostages under the first phase of a ceasefire deal that started on 10 October. Four of the five dead hostages still in Gaza are Israelis and one is Thai.

Israel has criticised Hamas for not yet returning all the bodies. Hamas says it is hard to find them under rubble.

PIJ is an armed group allied with Hamas. It took part in the 7 October attack and previously held some Israeli hostages.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, a campaign group, welcomed the return.

ANOTHER...!!! New Comet C/2025 V1 Borisov Is Speeding Past Earth Nov 14th-16th

A newly discovered comet, C/2025 V1 Borisov, is speeding through speeding through the solar system between the Earth and interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, drawing attention from astronomers worldwide. The object was recently observed with a brightness, or magnitude, of 13.8, and a coma spanning 2.3 arcminutes, according to the Comet Observers Database (COBS).

Its closest approach to Earth will occur on 11 November 2025, when it passes at a distance of about 103 million kilometres (0.68 AU), which is safely distant, yet close enough to provide excellent observation opportunities.

Key Orbital Details

According to the JPL Small-Body Database, Borisov’s orbit has an eccentricity of 1.00958273 and an inclination of 112.7°, meaning it follows a highly elongated and steep path around the Sun. It will reach its perihelion, the point closest to the Sun, on 16 November 2025, just days after its nearest approach to Earth.

The comet is currently about 106 million kilometres away, with light taking nearly six minutes to reach us. From the UK, it rises around 4:01 a.m., reaches its highest point near 10:01 a.m., and sets by 4:03 p.m.

Turkey issues arrest warrant for Israel’s Netanyahu over Gaza genocide

Turkey on Friday issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and dozens of other Israeli officials on “genocide” charges.

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office said it has issued warrants against 37 people. Besides Netanyahu, warrants target Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and military chief Eyal Zamir, among others.

The warrants charge the Israeli officials with “crimes against humanity” and “genocide” committed in Gaza and against the flotilla carrying aid to the enclave, according to the prosecutor’s office. That flotilla was intercepted by Israeli authorities last month.

Israel was quick to condemn and reject the warrants.

Israel ramps up Lebanon strikes as Hezbollah vows to defend itself

‘We reaffirm our legitimate right to defend ourselves against an enemy that imposes war on our country’, Hezbollah says.

The Israeli military says it has launched a wave of air strikes targeting what it says are Hezbollah military sites in southern Lebanon as Israel escalates daily attacks on its northern neighbour in flagrant violation of a one-year-old ceasefire.

The barrage on Thursday came soon after a separate Israeli raid targeted southern Lebanon’s Tyre district. The Israeli army claimed it hit members of Hezbollah’s construction unit and that it would “continue to operate in order to remove any threat to the territory of the state of Israel”.

Typhoon Kalmaegi death toll hits 114 in Philippines; storm rebuilds strength as it heads to Vietnam

CEBU, Philippines, Nov 6 (Reuters) - The death toll in the Philippines from Typhoon Kalmaegi rose to 114 with another 127 people still missing, the disaster agency said on Thursday, as the storm that devastated the country's central regions regained strength as it headed towards Vietnam.
In Vietnam's Gia Lai province, some 350,000 people were expected to have been evacuated by the middle of the day as authorities warned of heavy rains and damaging winds that could cause flooding in low-lying areas and disrupt agricultural activity.
In the Philippines' hardest-hit province of Cebu, the scale of the destruction became clearer as floodwaters receded to reveal flattened homes, overturned vehicles and streets choked with debris.
More than 200,000 people were evacuated in the Philippines ahead of Kalmaegi hitting on Tuesday. Some have returned to find their homes destroyed, while others have begun the arduous cleanup, scraping mud from their houses and streets.
"The challenge now is debris clearing... These need to be cleared immediately, not only to account for the missing who may be among the debris or may have reached safe areas but also to allow relief operations to move forward," Raffy Alejandro, a senior civil defence official, told DZBB radio.
