Philippines students are told to stay home as Southeast Asia copes with a sweltering heat wave

Southeast Asia Heat Wave Shuts Schools, Stokes Power Demand

  • Philippines to close public schools on Monday and Tuesday
  • Thai power demand hits record as heat-linked death toll rises
  • The Philippines announced it will halt in-person classes at public schools, while Thai power demand rose to a record, as the heat wave gripping southern Asia continued to take its toll.

The temperature in metropolitan Manila soared to 38.8C (101.8F) on Saturday, according to the nation’s weather forecaster. That beat the previous all-time high recorded in May 1915, ABS-CBN News reported. The Department of Education responded to the sweltering weather, and a jeepney transport strike across the country, by closing public schools on Monday and Tuesday.

British Army scraps BEARD BAN after 100 years. Praise the Lord.

Army lifts 100-year ban on serving soldiers having beards, by Royal Appointment

Beards can be worn in the British Army with immediate effect after a survey found serving personnel, reservists and veterans were overwhelmingly in favour of overturning the ban.

The change was backed by General Sir Patrick Sanders, Chief of the General Staff, and it went as high as the Commander-in-Chief, King Charles.

Personnel have to tell their chain of command they intend to grow a beard and it has to look good within two weeks.

Genesis 1:
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Police detain 13 trying to smuggle goats onto Temple Mount for sacrifice ritual

Suspects, found by police with animals in their possession, likely seeking to perform biblical Jewish sacrificial ritual in honor of Passover

Jerusalem, April 22, 2024. (Israel Police)

Police on Monday detained 13 people suspected of attempting to smuggle goats onto the Temple Mount in Jerusalem to sacrifice the animals in honor of Passover, in line with ancient Jewish tradition.

The suspects, all of whom were between the ages of 13 and 21, were caught with goats in their possession, including one that was being hidden inside a baby carriage and another inside a shopping bag, a police statement said.

The suspects were taken to a police station in Jerusalem to be investigated on suspicion of disturbing the public order, and the goats were confiscated and transferred for necessary veterinary treatment, the statement added.

Greece: Orange Sahara dust haze descends over Athens

A dramatic orange haze has descended over Athens as clouds of dust have blown in from the Sahara desert.

It is one of the worst such episodes to hit Greece since 2018, according to officials.

Greece had already been struck by similar clouds in late March and early April, which also covered areas of Switzerland and southern France.

The skies are predicted to clear on Wednesday, says Greece's weather service.

Air quality has deteriorated in many areas of the country and on Wednesday morning the Acropolis in Athens was no longer visible because of the dust. The cloud has reached as far north as Thessaloniki.

Greeks with respiratory conditions have been urged to limit the time they spend outdoors, wear protective masks and avoid taking physical exercise until the dust clouds clear.

Four injured as runaway military horses bolt through central London

Four people have been taken to hospital after five runaway horses of the Household Cavalry threw off their riders and raced through London.

The horses, one of which was covered in blood, caused chaos as they roamed the city centre and collided with vehicles, including a double-decker bus and taxi.

They initially became spooked by loud construction during a routine military exercise in Belgravia, the Army said.

Officers said the horses had been recovered and returned to camp.

Two of the animals were finally recovered in Limehouse in east London, more than five miles from where the incident began. The Army said they were undergoing veterinary care.

An army spokesperson told the BBC that three soldiers were receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries. The fourth person injured in the incident is believed to be a cyclist and member of the public.
